HAZLETON, Pa. -- When HASD Superintendent, Dr. Butler wouldn't permit a cyber schooled couple to attend last year's senior Prom event, much of our community rallied up and demanded that they'd be allowed to attend it.
On May 9th, the Hazleton Headlines was the first to cover the story, and immediately it got people talking.
Along with our readers, we called and emailed letters to the HASD School Board and Dr. Butler, demanding that they'd have a change of hearts.
The next day, Dr. Butler's issued response made it seem doubtful that Jackie and Austin would ever be permitted to attend Prom, but the community didn't concede quite yet.
As one, our voices grew louder.
More news outlets, including the Standard Speaker, Hazleton News 1, and WNEP picked up on the story and began covering it.
Because of the overwhelming support of everyone who came together and voiced their thoughts to the school district, on May 11th, Dr. Butler officially allowed for Jackie Meiser and Austin Sterenchock to attend Prom.
In addition, Dr. Butler made clear that from then on, Cyber Charter students in general will always be welcomed at the Prom without any further problems.
When we exercise our constitutional right to our freedom of speech, it shows that change can be brought about - all it takes is a voice.
