HAZLETON, Pa. -- In 1902, what would in years later become the largest outdoor Shrine in America, was erected by one of the smallest parishes in the Diocese of Scranton.
In the December 31, 1977 edition of the Hazleton Standard Speaker, in an article noting Sacred Heart's Shrine's 75th anniversary, the paper wrote that widespread attention was attracted by the shrine and visitors would arrive from all over the United States and Canada to see and pray at the shrine.
That summer in 1977, an estimated 40,000 persons visited the shrine right outside of Hazleton, in Harleigh, Pa.
