#1 - Cyber Schooled Couple Denied Prom Entry (May 9th through May 11th)
Jackie Meiser and her boyfriend, Austin, were hoping to attend the district's Prom back in the Spring of 2016.
Although the two were cyber students, school policy states that any student in cyber school is permitted to join in extra-curricular activities just as long as they reside in district limits and that their respectful school doesn't provide it.
However, Principal Mr. Petrone and Superintendent Dr. Butler originally denied the two entry.
The following day, our team reached out to Dr. Butler for comments.
He made the following statment:
"The high school and district administration has consistently upheld that cyber/charter students are not eligible to attend social events in our schools. Language in the law (updated in October 2004) does not require public schools to permit admittance to such social events as school dances, prom, pep rallies, etc."
After, I typed the following below Dr. Butler's words in an article from May 10th:
"Prom isn't just a dance, but a memory of simpler times for when we get older in age. Prom is the growing stem of many relationships and it's a night that many hold closest to them as they reflect back on their high school years.. Perhaps the district doesn't realize that."
The people had spoken, and because of that so had the Hazleton Area School District.
On May 11th, Dr. Butler would officially permit Jackie Meiser and Austin Sterenchock to attend this year's Prom. In addition, Dr. Butler also stretched that Cyber Charter students in general will always be welcomed at the Prom without any problems.
We were the first to cover this story before other major media outlets picked up on it.
