HAZLETON, Pa. -- On Saturday, August 26th, minutes after 2 o'clock in the early morning hours, a silver Dodge Caravan with expired registration was stopped at the intersection of North Locust Street and West Broad Street during HPD's saturation patrol dubbed "Pressure Point."
Upon approaching the vehicle officers noticed a female in the front passenger seat holding an unrestrained infant.
The woman stated she didn’t know the child’s mother but found the infant left outside the Second Base Bar, 131 W. Broad Street, unattended for approximately 25 minutes.
Shortly thereafter, an employee of the bar arrived on scene and stated the child’s mother showed up at the bar with the infant and left while the child was outside with no supervision.
APTS was dispatched to the scene to provide care to the infant.
Luzerne County Children and Youth were advised of the situation.
Officers then took protective custody of the infant and officers followed the ambulance to LVH where she was treated.
18-year-old, Destiny Davila, arrived on scene and identified herself as the infant’s mother.
Davila had bloodshot, glassy, watery eyes and an odor of intoxicating beverages emanating from her breath and facial region.
Davila was taken into custody without incident and transported to city hall.
Davila stated that she had been drinking before deciding to take her (14) month daughter to the bar.
Davila stated someone at the bar offered to watch the infant and eventually discovered her daughter was missing.
Charges of endangering the welfare of children, recklessly endangering another person, underage, and public drunkenness were completed.
Davila was then transported to LCCF.
Chief of Police, Jerry Speziale, issued the following statements in a press release:
“The appalling situation like what occurred last night are stark reminders to mothers in desperate situations that there is always a better choice for their baby”
“Sadly, this is the first newborn abandonment of 2017 and thankfully the baby was found unharmed by alert officers.
"This is a very serious situation that comes with consequences not easily remedied."
